5-Module Surgical Extraction Program | Melbourne
Oral Surgical Principles for the General Dentist 40+ CPD Hours – Extraction course designed to begin or excel your surgical extraction education. Free material provided for every student to help set up your first surgery.

Module 1: Online Learning
This initial module teaches the basics of Oral Surgery: patient assessment, medical history, local anaesthesia and anatomy.
Topics covered:
- Local Anaesthesia
- Consent: surgical extraction consent protocols and cases that have gone before the board previously and learning from these examples
- Anatomy: Back to basics in dental anatomy
Module 2: Oral Surgery Principles
This face-to face module aims to teach the necessities of Oral Surgery including: patient assessment, medical history, oral surgery principles, introduction to third molar extraction, consent and anatomy.
Topics covered:
- Patient and case assessment.
- Consent: surgical extraction consent protocols and cases that have gone before the board previously and learning from these examples.
- Anatomy: Back to basics in dental anatomy.
- Treatment planning: Patient driven treatment planning.
- Radiography: CBCT (When, why, and how).
- Third molar extraction treatment planning.
Module 3: Clinical Oral Surgery
This module aims to expand students knowledge and understanding of surgical execution, flap design, sectioning techniques and protocols, clinical prosthetic tips and more.
Topics covered:
- Flap design and planning.
- Suturing techniques and primary closure.
- How to improve denture design with pre-prosthetic surgery.
- Surgical planning – Principles of sectioning.
- Removal of third-molars – advanced techniques.
- Atraumatic extraction techniques.
- Ridge preservation techniques.
Module 4: Advanced Oral Surgery
This module is heavily clinically based, ensuring students are ready for live surgery.
Topics covered:
- Extraction considerations prior to implant placement.
- Complications, management and prevention.
- When to refer? Interdisciplinary approaches.
- Sterile set-up.
- Hands-on pigs head and model training.
Module 5: Live Surgery
This is a two day module, providing students with the opportunity to observe, assist, treat their own patients, engage in mentoring discussions, learn sterilisation protocols and key surgical principles in a clinical environment.
Each student will be allowed one patient with up to 4 extractions.

Dr. Geoffrey Hall
Author, international speaker, and myth-busting orthodontist, Dr. Geoffrey Hall has been a central figure in the field of orthodontics in Australia and internationally for several decades.
Dr. Hall has been on the orthodontic teaching staff at both the University of Melbourne and the University of Pennsylvania, and he has served as an orthodontist at Monash Medical Centre in the Craniofacial Unit. Dr. Hall developed a short term cosmetic orthodontic treatment called Smilefast practiced by many dentists internationally.
Dr. John Hagiliassis
Dr. John graduated from the University of Melbourne with a Bachelor of Dentistry in 1998. Dr. John founded a South Melbourne-based dental clinic in 2011, which quickly listed on BRW’S Fast 100 businesses in Australia for the years 2011 and 2012.
Dr. John is the largest provider of Phillips Zoom! whitening treatment in Australasia since 2012. Dr. John absolutely loves technology and loves finding ways to incorporate it into his practice to make him more accurate and efficient. Many years ago, John was one of the first people to have an iTero scanner in the world and has continued this trend by updating his technology constantly.

Because the student cohorts are small, it really enables you to get more one-on-one attention with the tutors, pick up tips and tricks, and identify small errors that you might be making and correct them straight away
